Summary: Infrequent system freezes when using OpenGL on ATI
                    radeon driver r100
    Kernel Version: 2.6.16
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
             Owner: drivers_video-dri@kernel-bugs.osdl.org
         Submitter: auslands-kv@gmx.de

Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur:
Distribution: Kanotix
Hardware Environment: IBM Thinkpad X31, ATI Mobility M6
Software Environment: Debian unstable
Problem Description:

First of all: Iīm sorry that I donīt have very closely identified the problem so
far. Unfortunately, I havenīt got much help elsewhere. In my last bug report
here, I was given help very fast, so I just try with this much more complicated
one...

So, the problem is simply that the computer system freezes completely in
irregular time intervals. The whole system freezes and is no longer responsive
to anything. BIOS still responds (at least I got sound signals when plugging in
or out the ac adaptor). No network either, screen just freezes, too.

The RAM has been checked thoroughly with memtest for more than 12 hours -> no
problem.

The freezes are totally infrequent and occur on average once or twice per week.
Sometimes the system has been running for only a few minutes, somtimes for days.

There are no system messages related to the freeze. It just happens -> thatīs
why I suspect a kernel driver.

The only commonality I have found so far, is that all crashes seem to appear
when an OpenGL application is running (e.g. screensaver). So I might suspect the
ATI radeon driver. Here is some data:

xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.5.8.0-1
xserver-xorg 7.0.19

OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Radeon 20050528 AGP 1x NO-TCL
OpenGL version string: 1.2 Mesa 6.4.1

And here the xorg conf part:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "ATI"
        Driver "radeon"
        VendorName "IBM Thinkpad"
        BoardName "ATI Radeon Mobility M6"
        Option "EnablePageFlip" "on"
        Option "AGPFastWrite" "no"
        Option "DynamicClocks" "on"
        Option "BIOSHotkeys" "on"
        Option "MetaModes" "1024x768 1024x768-1280x1024 1280x1024"
        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
        Option "sw_cursor" "off"
EndSection

Now I know that this is not much info, not even sure that itīs really the video
driver. So my main question is: How can I identify the problem cause? Is there
any possibility to get more debug info? How do you normally identify the
component responsible for such an infrequent crash?

Thanks for any help!!

Michael

P.S.: BTW, I havenīt even found a specific xorg bugtracker...
