This one is easy, I take it.

When you want to sync 1GB over network, its one GB of traffic. You get
a bit less when you use compression, but otherwise 1GB stays around 1GB
regardless which app or protocol you use. Doesn't matter if its http,
webdav, rsync, drbd, glusterfs or scp.

The overhead of drbd will be fairly low and not lower the sync-speed.
At least compared to the performance-issue your WAN and VPN connection
will create on normal (write-)access to the filesystem on top of drbd.
