We didn't have so much different HW and so many different archs under
support. And we also didn't have so many different subsystems.

Actually today it's often much easier to write drivers, since we now
have a lot of subsystems that already take most of the burden. That's
a key aspect in kernel development: common code for common things, try
not to repeat any code - following Wirth's philosophy.
