winipcfg (on 9x) and ipconfig on NT/2000 is the method to find out what the
current IP configuration is on these boxes. It read the information out of
the registry. It has a function to do dhcp release/renew. This function
calls one of Microsoft's unpublished APIs to causes the release and renew to
happen. Once that happens it reads the registry entry again. The format of
this registry entry is also not documented.

While you may want to use a new feature but without M$ support of that
feature, you can't use it. The is the inherent problem with closed source
systems. (I am not bashing M$ hear but all closed systems, because the
customer has no freedom). HP-UX's dhcpclient is fairly brain-dead. HP users
are stuck with what HP has provided just like M$.

Hi,
The reason why I need to run dhcp client on windows is that
I wanna adding some addtional features for the DHCP such as
the ones currently defined in the IETF drafts about the 3A stuff
for DHCP. So if you want some new DHCP features, you must
modify the server side as well as the client side.

By the way, do you know how the winipcfg.exe is implemented?
This winipcfg.exe has some way of interacting with DHCP client
on windows 9x.

thanks,

weifeng

It is implemented as a set of dlls and depending on Windows version a vxd.
The windows 9x,NT, 2000 clients on my network work fine (well maybe not fine
but consistently). Why would you wnat to run dhclient on Windows?
