Wietse Venema's postfix (formerly vmailer) is on the verge of being
released. Unlike Dents, which is being developed publicly, postfix
has been developed extensively by a private group of hackers under the
direction of Venema.

Postfix is a feature-for-feature competitor to qmail, i.e., it kicks
sendmail's butt. It is supposed to be marginally better than qmail
in certain areas, such as delivery performance, but the clincher is that,
unlike qmail, it has a clean and free licensing situation, which leads
me to believe that it is a better long-term contender than is qmail.
