There are currently problems with DRI for the i810 driver:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=359328

You can see if direct rendering is working with

glxinfo | grep direct

When you have logged into the locked-up computer you can check
/var/log/Xorg.0.log for further clues about what goes wrong.

As far as restarting gdm goes, try to "pkill -9 X" first, that should at
least save you the trouble of rebooting.
