If that's the case, you boot the machine, dump it into maintenance ('linux
single'), kill the X configuration, and allow the boot to continue.  Instant
text console while you fix X.

I agree... xdm and friends should be part of a valid 'task-x-window-system'.
Whether they're part of the core or not... ahh, that's another subject.

situations where the config is b0rked enough that ctrl-alt-F1 doesn't work.
