Also, /etc/mailname is used by MTAs. This is from sendmail:

gabier% grep mailname /usr/sbin/sendmailconfig 
mailname=$(cat ${sysconfdir}/mailname 2>/dev/null || hostname --fqdn);
[...]

I'd bet exim and others do something like this (if not, a bug should be
filed).
