I can't reproduce this on a recent version of the Debian cyrus-sasl2
packages.

What version of Debian are you using? If you have a recent version,
confirm that you are using md5 passwords by looking at the files
in /etc/pam.d -- common-password should have a line like this:

password   required   pam_unix.so nullok obscure md5

You could also try to log in as user test with the longer password and
see if that works. It's likely that this is a PAM configuration issue
and not a saslauthd issue at all.
