Workshop in conjunction with ACM Multimedia (ACM MM98)

        "Face/Gesture Recognition and Their Applications"

                September 12 (Sat), 1998
at the University of Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom

Organizers:
Jun Ohya (ATR Media Integration & Communications Research Labs.)
Ryohei Nakatsu (ATR Media Integration & Communications Research
Labs.)
        Richard Reilly (University College Dublin)

Overview:

Face and gesture recognition are typically associated with newer
interfaces
to multimedia applications and systems. However, both face and gesture
recognition play important roles in access to information systems for
the
physically and mentally Disabled and the Elderly. These users groups are
unable to use the standard technology input device of keyboard and
mouse.
Speech recognition is not always feasible as an input mechanism due to
speech dysarthria and articulation difficulties.
The aim of this workshop is to provide the attendee with an overview of
the
start-of-art in face and gesture recognition and to illustrate by
example
how these impact on disability issues such as augmentative and
alternative
communication, tremor and gait diagnosis and analysis, telemedine and
speech/gesture fusion.
