I found out that GTK and LibreOffice do support the CUPS options, but
not very well.

This is an interesting article about GTK and CUPS:

LibreOffice does it well with some variables, not with others. But you
can use also a GTK interface with LibreOffice 3.5 and higher (in my
experiences this did only work with 3.5.4 RC1).
