Daryl,
your example was very helpful, thanks a lot! I got it working quickly. 
The only thing I had to change was "iwlist wlan0 scan", which doesn't 
work on my system. I use "iw dev wlp2s0 scan" instead.

IMHO your example should go into the manual, or (commented out) into 
/etc/rc.d/net.
