Hi,

I've been building my KDE without FAM for a a few months now.  I found it to 
be more stable (I think that I mentioned this in the README).  As things 
stand at crux.nu, fam is in the attic, because I don't want to adopt it, and 
am searching for alternatives.  If you use a kernel < 2.6.13, then I'd build 
KDE without fam.  If you use a kernel > 2.6.13, and want the efficiency 
promises that FAM promises, please try out the cleaned up, modernized fam 
replacement called "gamin".  You can find it in my httpup repository:

I'm in the process of testing the latest version of gamin.  New features 
include disabling DNotify support--which is what I think might have been 
causing the problems.  iNotify, is apparently much better.  If you have the 
time/inclination, please test the linux > 2.6.13 + iNotify + gamin.  I would 
be nice if these were part of the default for the next version of CRUX.
