Correct but the software was not much different than it was
today.  It was as you said how the programs were written.

All too often the programs are written not to use the maximum amount
of capability. (In todays windoze)

I was reading an article on Cray and the companies that have
succeeded Cray and noted many of them are using Dual opteron
processing computers (64 bit varieties) to do their work.

Oh by the way the software of choice used by many of these folks was
a derivative of IBM AS400 I think  that or Unix.  (it has been 15
years so I am a little fuzzy on this.)  I know they used Sunsparc
work stations.
