Maybe this will help. I had somewhat related problems within Win XP Pro and
tried everything but to no avail. There were two things that finally seemed
to make a difference. No good explanations but here's what finally worked.
1. Completely reinstalled the Network Adapter driver: uninstalled the
driver for the Network Adapter, in my case a Wireless LAN Mini PCI Driver; then
uninstalled the device itself; then powered off and unplugged; then restarted.
Everything else had been replaced/reinstalled, and that was the last place to
try.
2. During some registry cleanup, some deletes didn't work until I changed
the permissions. Otherwise, some edits didn't take.
I had to resort to all this because MS Backup doesn't. After I recovered I
bought and started using PowerQuest Drive Image 7.0 (now owned by Symantec) in
addition to Backup and System Restore.
Good luck!

I made a mistake (besides using MS products). I uninstalled Outlook
Express thinking I didn't need it. Now my Outlook e-mail doesn't work.
I can open it but it freezes and I have to ctrl-alt-del it to kill it.
Then when I shut down W2k, I get an error message concerning "WMS
Idle". I Googled and researched and found that (1) I am not alone and
(2) no one's come up with a fix yet. I hope I am wrong on the 2nd
part. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling, deleting and recreating
profiles with new personal folders but to no avail. I even tampered
with the registry based on something I found on Microsoft's site. I
have been able to connect successfully internally on my office LAN (we
use Microsoft Mail) but internet access has evaded me. Has anyone any
experience with this problem?
