Just to bring you all up to date...if you still remember the issue...

I disconnected the network and connected just one computer to the
cable modem. It worked well for a while and then the same problems
started again. I was puzzled. Called the cable company. They came
to my home and changed their cables.

Now I am with the network doing OK, with the SMC router. In the
mean time I bought a Netgear Router, just in case...

Now I will try to connect a third computer through a  wireless
access point.

Nervous...
