I have opted for cable (Comcast's @Home service) primarily because I have
heard too many horror stories about DSL - and few about cable - from those
around the office.

I think that DSL is technically a better technology, but more than a few
people have nicknamed it "DS-Hell" because of various problems. (For
instance, here's an item in today's Wired magazine on this theme:
http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,41433,00.html)

The thrust of the article is that DSL is still about a year away from being
a mature technology.

That said, while I choose cable for home, I am looking to add a symmetric
DSL line for my office as a backup to our fractional T1. I'll be here to
troubleshoot the install, and it promises good bandwidth for a good price
(even if cable were available in a commercial building, Comcast's limited
upload speed would make it unsuitable).

For those shopping for their companies, look ahead to Gigabit Ethernet from
the likes of Yipes! (www.yipes.com) and Cogent Communications
(www.cogentco.com). These numbers will make your eyes pop out: Cogent, for
instance, offers 100Mbps bandwidth - and yes, that's 100 megabits per
second, or more than 60 times the speed of a full T1 - for $1,000 per month.
(The drawback: limited current availability.)

For what it's worth,
Dan Stewart

Subject: DSL or Cable?

I'm trying to decide between Qwest DSL or AT&T Cable modem for high speed
connection.

Don't need another phone line, but wouldn't go against it if Qwest is the
better option

Cable is available here but I hear that AT&T email is a problem. However, I
would continue to use my ISP so I just want to make sure that th internet
connection isn't the problem with the email.

I have a Sony Vaio Laptop that I will be connecting to the external modem
whichever way I go. I've also heard that I should avoid the USB connection
with AT&T, is this true?

Thanks for hte help in advance.

Jeff
