This is what I use

pb:~ grey$ cat bin/clamdping
sudo perl -MIO::Socket::UNIX -we 'my $s = IO::Socket::UNIX->new 
(shift); $s->print("PING"); print $s->getline; $s->close' /tmp/clamd
