You're right, I had a | instead of a !. Thanks for the catch, and sorry for
all the noise. Everything's working fine now, Cherokee 0.6.0b700, PHP 5.2.3,
OpenSSL 0.9.8e, life is good....

BTW, Windows only chokes on forward slashes when entered interactively (via
a dialog box or at a DOS prompt). Otherwise, Windows will happily consume
them.
