I'm still working on finding a solution though.  I'll keep you posted. 
Unfortunatly, my friend may be right; you might have to get that down and dirty
before you can figure out what to do.

In the mean time, could you possibly provide the C source code that you have? 
I might be able to re-write it in Perl or, if not, find someone who can.
