i'm trying to sort out some emacs confusion. this is under col-2.2,
but i'm seeking general information as well.

i downloaded and built emacs from source. when i type emacs at a
terminal window, i get xemacs. when i type emacs -nw at a terminal
window, i get a nongraphical xemacs. when i type emacs in a full
console screen, i get emacs.

now. something is intervening here. what i'm trying to do is find out
what, where, and what it does.
