I notice that some text/console mode programs have been dropped from
COL 2.2 which were still included as of COL 1.3. ZGV, a viewer program
that does not require X, is not there. Minicom, the telix modem software
clone, which many HOWTOs recommend while configuring a modem is not there.
I have responded by installing these from the COL 1.3 cdroms. ZGV works
fine and minicom works (I did have to manually make it setuid root though).
Is there a cdrom with some of the non-KDE programs that have been dropped
available or can they be downloaded? I now I could track down source from
somewhere and recompile but I was hoping updated versions are available on
request.

The combination of fvwm and lg (looking glass) does not seem to be included
anymore. This one is presumably because Caldera has decided to heavily back
KDE as the GUI environment. Can I use the versions of these that are on
the COL 1.3 cdroms under COL 2.2?

More generally, which programs from the 1.3 cdroms can safely be used?
Clearly old versions of individual programs that have been updated on the
2.2 cdroms should give way to the newer versions. Which of the dropped
programs are still safe to use?

Personally, I find an attempt to concentrate too exclusively on GUI based
use of Linux as a negative trend. I understand that new users and converts
from Windoze 9x/NT will want graphical ways of doing things. I just think
a major flaw of the Windoze philosophy is to force use of a GUI. Under
COL 2.2 the CLI (command line interface) is on par with the GUI rather
than being a second class citizens as under Windoze. I would hope that
this will continue. I hope I will never *need* to have X running to do
basic functions.
