I played a bit with some test versions and it looks to me, that we can
even go that modular way by achieving compatibility with older binary
keyboard tables and versions.

That modular solution seems to give the best of both worlds upstream
compatibility on one hand and compactness on the other. I really like
that and will successively provide information/patches to go for that
solution.
