Can you write up a rationale why do you continue to use and patch up
ifupdown to try to handle even more of zillions of possible network
configurations?

It's a "mission impossible" and I suggest to step back from keyboard
for an hour and re-think how do you handle network
(re,de)configuration in general.

But don't think about *your* particular configuration only.
Don't devise ad-hoc solutions, they don't pay off long-term.

Throw in openvpn tunnels, pppd interfaces and other things which tend
to pop up and vanish in random order, and also imagine that you have
some web-driven firewall reconfiguration interface which allows you
to block/upblock traffic to selected IP address(es) and ports.
It should be operable at anytime and take effect withint few seconds
after pressing [Apply] on a web page, not after the box is rebooted.

I had it working on one of my machines sometime in the past, and
I still have it all sitting in a backup.
