i'm still wrestling with dpkg in terms of

1) installing a .deb file, and
2) removing that file afterwards

first, i'm assuming that i have the right to take an existing system and
add a dpkg structure *on* *top* of that to start using dpkg to look after
add-ons, right?

in order to start installing .deb files, i found from testing that i
need to create the following initial structure:

  # mkdir /var/lib/dpkg/
  # touch /var/lib/dpkg/status
  # mkdir /var/lib/dpkg/info/

once i do the above, i can successfully install a package:

  # dpkg -i tds_1_ppc-Linux.deb

one of the results is the creation of the file
/var/lib/dpkg/info/tds.list, so that part seems to be fine.

however, when i try to delete that package, i get:

# dpkg -P tds
dpkg: Package tds is uninstalled or unknown

have i created all of the necessary infrastructure? the install seems
to work, but the removal is yet to work.

rday
