Here's a wild guess - you are using a standard
glibc without any patches for your embedded
16-bytes-per-cacheline ppc.

mpc8xx processors (860, 855, 850, 823, 821) are
typical 16-bytes-per-cacheline processors.

I have a patch for glibc-2.1.3 if you are interested.

Or something is strange with busybox.
I've only used the stable version on ppc,
and I have not seen any problems like that.
