Attached a patch to fix various things including:

* new-applet HOWTO
* renaming extract_create_dirs to extract_create_leading_dirs as I seem to 
have confused everyone about what it was meant to do.
* fixed ar, now extracts librarys and long file names
* fixed the cpio symlink problem (seeking past twice if only listing, so 
get magic error)
* fixed cpio help message
