This worked wonderfully.  I ended up switching a <%perl> section of code
to a <%shared> section of code in my element template where the $title
was being set so that I could reference the $title in my new <%method
head>.

Works flawlessly and makes so much sense.  I also ended up converting a
bunch of other tags in my main autohandler to use methods in
anticipation of future needs.  Thanks again.
