Are you using the USB cable that came with the phone?  Do you have a memory
card in the phone?  If so, can you copy files if you use the USB mass
storage mode?

I had the Dare before (I have the Touch now) and I was using a retractable
micro USB cable and I was unable to copy files with it and the phone was an
"unknown USB Device" when I tried to use the USB Mass Storage mode.
