Ive had similar problems...
Seems that none of the 9.x.x series will work on any libc5 based systems
(well only different versions of slackware Ive tried).  But any version of
9.x.x will compile fine on systems with glibc.  8.2.3-REL will work and
compile great on those ol' libc5 systems though.

Mind you I dont get the same error(s) as you when trying to compile any
9.x.x release, but in any case, the compile ends up failing.
