Those are *different* questions! It's like saying "when I ask my bartender
for a beer, I get one, but not when I ask him for a socket wrench".
Different questions, different answers, different results.

Chances are, you're getting the correct answers from the nameserver. Seems
like the problem is more with your questions and/or expectations.

Minimally,

    named-xfer -z {zone} -f {output-filename} {address(es)-of-master(s)}

But why use named-xfer when you can use dig or even (shudder) nslookup?
