Hi Michael,
I've just started playing around with Fresco as well, and thought I 
might contribute a dead simple listing of the commands I used, in case 
Tobias' email didn't steer you to the right parts of the INSTALL file 
you missed. I downloaded the source from CVS; see 
http://download.fresco.org/cvs.html for details. Also, since you already 
compiled fresco once, I'm sure you already have the dependencies installed.

$ mkdir -p ~/work/fresco
$ mkdir -p ~/work/fresco/build  # where i built the sources
$ mkdir -p ~/work/fresco/install # where i installed stuff
$ cd ~/work/fresco
$ echo "checkout -A
diff -u
log -N
update -d" > ~/.cvsrc
|$ export CVSROOT=":pserver:anonymous@src.fresco.org:/cvs/fresco"
||$ cvs login # /Just hit enter for the password prompt./|
$ cvs co Fresco
$ cd Fresco
$ ./autogen.sh
$ cd ../build
$ ../Fresco/configure --prefix `cd ../install; pwd`
$ make
$ make install
$ cd ../install
$ export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=`pwd`/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
$ bin/berlin -e bin/fresco-demo
$ bin/berlin -e bin/fresco-demo -c SDL -d GLDrawingKit

This is just what I hacked together on a Sunday afternoon, and I'm not 
an active developer, so this isn't necessarily an ideal directory 
layout; it just worked to get the demos up and running.
