hi everybody,

Once upon a time we had a 'font server' based on freetype.
For various reasons we stalled it and started using unifont.
Today I subscribed to the freetype mailing lists. There is
some interesting perspective for the upcoming freetype 2:

First of all it is clear that we can't really live without
truetype or t1 (postscript). Unifont works, but it is quite
ugly.
The freetype project is going to provide an API which is
able to handle TT as well as PS fonts so we really should
use it. I looked into the gltt library and think that we
should do the following:

* split gltt into two parts: a C++ freetype front end and
  an openGL font renderer
* make the openGL font renderer part of the GLDrawingKit
* adapt a similar renderer for the GGIDrawingKit
* doing this, straighten out some lacking features in
gltt, namely unicode compatibility and correct kerning
  handling

Hopefully the C++ front end to freetype will become part
of the freetype project itself (I send a request concerning
that to the freetype ML), then we wouldn't need to maintain
this code ourselfs.

Best regards,	Stefan
