Serial connections tend to just work (once you've got them wired
correctly), and need no fancy-schmancy OS level custom drivers.
And almost every piece of equipment tends to come with a serial port
for management and monitoring. Computers, switches, RAID controllers,
environment sensors, UPS:es...
