no, this is not a surprise to me.  The backticks were always
problematic with respect to quoting.  That's why it is really
advisable to use $() these days.

But please note that the problem is really specific to that
particular build of bash.  The bash 3.2.something on all my computers
works fine.  And when Ralf and I independently tried to build bash
3.1.17, we were not able to reproduce your problem.

It is perfectly possible that there is a buggy bison in slackware
used to build that version of bash.
