I got 7.2 with a standard 2.4.18 kernel working. I also got 7.3 with ataraid
support working. I didn't even get a change to test, as dropping a drive in
either of the above installes crashed the server. I'm using a Tyan 2505
board with onboard Promise Fasttrack 100 chipset onboard ( PDC20267 ).
Using the drivers from Promise, you are limited to using the 2.4.7-10
kernel..default to 7.2. I contacted Promise, and they pretty much told me
that they work on Redhat versions, and not on kernel versions, so getting a
"precompiled" driver from them for a new kernel ain't going to happen very
soon.
I have a slightly newer version of the ft.o drivers that Promise tech
support sent me, let me know if you want them. Again these drivers are only
for a a default RH 7.2 install..ie. 2.4.7-10 kernel.

Subject: raid 0 pdc20276 and rh 7.2, install ok, but kernel
compile2.4.19-pre8 bad performance
Hi,
I installed rh 7.2 with the the ft scsi mod from promise ok, but I
thought I would recompile my kernel and try out the new ataraid support
for my promise chipset, which is allegedly supported. Hardware:
asus A7V333, 256 DDRRAM, 2xMaxstore ata133 40G
promise PDC 20276/ MBFastTrack133 Lite
nvidia geforce 2mx400
filesystems are all ext3
kernel 2.4.18 patched with patch-2.4.19-pre8
After compiling my kernel with the ataraid params, and rebooting, the
mounting of filesystems takes about 5 minutes to complete. Furthermore,
performance is not very good. E.g. dd if=/dev/zero of=big count=3000k
takes more than 3 min.
With the promise supplied ft scsi mod, this same dd test takes about 1
min 17 secs.
Rebooting with my kernel also causes some harddrive seek/read errors.
Has anyone had good results compiling their kernel?
thanks.
Paul
