Your patch looks fine, but I'm hesitant to commit this right now.  Seems the
thread/mutex stuff, as it exists, heavily relies on WinNT (at least Win98) APIs
that aren't supported on Win95.  Not that I care that much, but we should look
at the apr functions once before applying your [most worthwhile] patch.
