subdomain-master is the culprit. Older subdomain-master packages were
written to do that horrid auto-compilation of the module because the
module was not yet in SuSE's kernel packages.

Part of uninstall (possibly upgrade?) scriptlet for this package just
trashes all those modules. Slightly newer versions of this package were
intelligent enough to try to determine if any modules were supplied by
kernel packages, and if so, to not recompile over them.

Maybe it is possible to get behaviour that is less annoying by installing
a newer subdomain-master package, but really, it is best if those ancient
packages never make their way to machines with newer kernels -- just use
the SLES9 SP3 kernel and subdomain user tools and try to forget those
nasty old packages. :)
