After many hours, I discovered that ssl CANNOT BE BUILT AS A
MODULE.  (At least for the versions I was working with.)  Is that your
problem?

You just have to basicly follow that tutorial in
INSTALL but use ./configure --enable-module=so in
configure string so PHP, etc can be added into Apache later.
