Subject:    [apache-server] Error Log deleted by accident

I have deleted my Error Log by accident. 

I have tried to recreate it by :
- creating an empty file called error_log
- with 777 permissions
- in the same directory as the orginal

but the server will not write to the file.  How do I get a 
functioning error_log back ?

I am working on a unix box, apache 1.3 .

Thank you for suggestions you might make.
