Darcy,

    If I'm reading your approach correctly, how does the rest of the server
see the username
and authtype?  

Vikas,  

   How are you maintaining persistence across connections?  Are you using
hidden
variable, cookie tokens, or something else?  One module that you might want to
look at is mod_auth_nochk.  It uses cookies to maintain username et al and 
provides user information to the rest of the server.
