That is completely bogus. Pthreads have been on Linux for quite some 
time and without any special kernel!

NPTL, a new approach to PThreads, is included in recent GLIBCs (and 
requires some stuff in 2.5/2.6 Kernels). Some distributions have back 
ported this to their 2.4 Kernels and GLIBCs (Red Hat).  Old kernels have 
always had PThreads, NPTL is just 'better'.
