Okay, it was definitely something I was doing.  I never quite figured
out what, but I took the plunge and rewrote the PerlRun script as a real
Apache module, and everything works now.

I was mistaken when I said it was happening with simple test scripts;
I had failed to restart the server before trying one out so while the
simple test script did invoke the same redefinition errors, it was due
to the earlier run of the flawed perl code.
