steps:
1) compile a 2.0.54 version on aix (./configure --
prefix=/usr/local/apache2;make;make install), tried also with .53 and .45.
2) create a file over 256bytes under DocumentRoot
3) do a telnet localhost 80 GET /file.txt HTTP/1.0
4) edit the file (add "1" into it)
5) repeat step4
-> you get blank, if you remove characters you get partially the old version 
of file. The header info is correct from the new file (date edited and lenght)

if you copy over the file (cp foo.txt file.txt), the same thing. If you 
restart apache, the same thing. If you delete the file and re-create it, it 
comes out fine.

Works with linux (the same versions) so I guess there's some issues with the 
fs libs the apache is using on AIX (aix 5.2 ML3).
