Ummm... this was stupid scripting on my part.  My ISO build script was using
'current' instead of 'release' so the ISOs were building with the old 2.6.22.18
i686 kernel.

I realized this when I built a 486 kernel and it still wouldn't boot.  I've
built an i586+1GB kernel now and it boots.  Currently building an i586+4GB
kernel and if it boots in virtualbox will roll new ISOs for 3.0-RELEASE.
