Paulo,
In principle the mailer should be prepared to wait for longer
than the amavisd-new timeout, which is 8 minutes by default
( $child_timeout = 8*60 ). With Postfix the my README.postfix
suggests double that or more ( -o smtp_data_done_timeout=1200 ),
so I do agree the qmail timeout of 1 minute is too short.
It has to contend with worst case, not the average processing time,
and this can imply Bayes db autoexpiration, DNS problems and the like.

I believe 100 processes is too many even for a powerful machine.
Getting it down to perhaps 20 will likely not affect the throughput
but would reduce lock contention on the Bayes db and saturating
the disk.
