That is certainly on way (and usually preferred), but you can also setup AWL
to auto-learn spam/ham by enabling it in your amavisd.conf (pre SA 3.0) by
setting: $sa_auto_whitelist = 1;

Or if you are using SA 3.0, enable it in you local.cf file with:
use_auto_whitelist 1
