Please do right away, we should work on Gitlab as much as possible in the
open, and it will make review and others joining much easier.

BTW, your PPA has no installation candidate, anything else I should take
care of to try that?

FWIW: we should not wait for this work to be done to make an alpha release
ASAP, simply to get more visibility of your efforts and get more people on
board. If they don't know there is work in progress, nobody will join, so
we really need to put that Alpha out.
