Sorry, but I'm having trouble parsing this message; it's early in the morning and my brain doesn't seem to be working. I think the situation is that: 1) MySQL provides a "--with-pic" flag in its configure script, but it doesn't currently work for libmysqld.a (per your bug report to MySQL). and 2) It's still up to each distribution's package maintainers to use the --with-pic flag when they're building their MySQL packages.
