I should have tried the new user test before reporting this. It did the trick.
I've therefore removed/renamed the majority of the KDE and Plasma settings
files from my own user account and now have a refreshed desktop, in which
Amarok does not exhibit the reported problem behaviour.
For interest, I think this was also related to the fact that double-clicking on
a word in, for example, Konsole, would not result in the normal behaviour of
that word becoming selected, because this has also been resolved.
I suppose this kind of hard-to-identify problem is liable to happen after lots
of upgrades. Thanks for your help Myriam, and sorry for troubling you
unnecessarily!
